Official Statement on the Future of the International Tornado Class
by ITA President Jürgen Jentsch
The Tornado Class is entering an important phase of technical development. To ensure long-term stability, supply security, and international competitiveness, the ITA is strengthening its foundation through modern and reliable industrial partners.
CUL Masts in Weilheim, Germany, is establishing a contemporary, CNC-based carbon mast production that will provide the class with consistent quality and future-proof manufacturing capacity. At the same time, Windrush Catamarans, led by Brett Burvill, continues to supply complete Tornado platforms, ensuring high-quality hull production and global availability.
To accompany and supervise these developments, the ITA has established a Working Group for the New Carbon Tornado Mast. The group operates under the leadership of International Measurer Martin Daum and the experienced racing sailor Dipl. Ing. Josef Gunkel, in close coordination with the Technical Committee of the ITA and World Sailing.
Based on the specifications provided by the Technical Committee, two prototype masts will be produced first. A ballot in autumn 2026 will then allow ITA members to vote on the adoption of the new carbon mast standard.
