2017 German Open Nationals

The President of the ITA (International Tornado Association) and the SCFF (Segelclub Füssen Forggensee) Jürgen Jentsch and his wife Sarah took the overall victory of the Tornado German National Championships 2017 on their home lake in Bavaria. 19 Tornado teams were on the start line from 3 Nations (Germany, Poland and Austria).

Sarah and Jürgen Jentsch had great boat speed and were in tune to the strong westerly conditions, taking good tactical decisions. Ex A-Class European Champion Bob Baier with his son Marc also from the SCFF came second with a bullet in the last race. Third place went to Markus Betz and Monika Schuster (the German Tornado President) from Lake Constance – Überlingen. Josef and David Gunkel came 4th, two mixed teams in the top 4 is a very pleasing result.

The championship was comprised by 5 races in 4 days, on day 1 and day 4.

For the first time in the history of the SCFF sailing club, 4 young 29er sailors crewed on the Tornado and did a great job. Estela Jentsch,15, current Mixed World Champion with Brett Burvill tried her hand at helming during the Nationals for the first time with David Fochler 20 as crew – so being the youngest Tornado team on the race course.

Seventy nine year old  Bruno Barth, a Tornado sailor since 1969 was the oldest helm and was joined by Melanie Holtkamp from the Polizei Sportverein Mainz.The event was well

The event was well organised with excellent work on the water by, Dr.Sybille and Dr. Michael Merk. For the 50th anniversary of the Tornado Class the Gala dinner was a wonderful chance to catch up on stories (old and new) about lived Tornado adventures.

The SCFF had organised the German Tornado Nationals in the passed in 1985,1993 and 2013.
