We are sad to finally inform all sailors of the postponement of the Tornado World Championship 2020 in Thessaloniki, Greece to 2021.
Jürgen Jentsch, President of the International Tornado Association along with its Committee Members and the Organizing Authority of the Nautical Club of Thessaloniki, represented by President Akis Tsalikis, have all come to the same conclusion and heavy heartedly the 2020 Tornado World Championship, planned for the 27th September to October 4th, 2020 in Thessaloniki, Greece, will be moved to next year with dates to be announced in January 2021.
For us, it is of highest priority to preserve the health and safety of all sailors, their families, and friends joining the event. Yes, Tornado sailing is COVID – FREE but our events are a reason for sailors and friends of the “Tornado family” to come together.
Leo Sanchez, Head of the Technical ITA Committee, International Tornado Measurer:
“The increase of infected people does not stop growing, nobody knows if, by autumn, the world has a treatment or a vaccine. “
Aaron Duncan, Member of the ITA Committee, International Tornado Measurer and Sailor:
“Unfortunately, I do not think that it would be likely that anyone would travel from New Zealand or Australia to attend the Championship. All returners have to go into mandatory 14-day isolation at a government facility upon arrival, so we would have to take another 14 days of leave from work, in addition to the days for the travel and regatta, and pay for it ourselves.”
Jürgen Jentsch, President of the ITA, and Sailor:
“It’s the first time in the 53 year history of the Class, that we have to cancel/postpone our international Championships.”
We also want to guarantee the participation of as many nations as possible and want the reigning Champions in all categories to be able to defend their titles.
Let’s all stay home and safe in order to meet again next year!
