2016 Tornado Worlds – Day 5

Greek Defenders Dominate the Fleet
Lindau, Germany

Only one race was sailed on Thursday (16th June) at the World Championships of the Tornado class in Lindau (Lake Constance), race number six. The leading three teams extended their lead. In the evening heavy rain returned again.

The race started at 1 pm as scheduled with 8-10 knots wind from West. It was a fast race – for the first up and down. In the Southwest, nearby the Swiss shoreline, rain clouds were building up but didn’t unload as long as the race lasted. But as the wind decreased at the end only 13 boats managed to finish within a 30-minute time limit, according to the rules. while 15 boats more remained on the course and were classified as DNF („did not finish”).

The top ranking of the last race reflected the overall result: Defenders Iordanis Paschalidis and Konstantinos Trigonis ahead of Nikolaos Mavros and Alexandros Tagarapoulos (both teams from Greece) and Australians Gavin Colby and Billy Leonard.

“We have to be very careful, not to make mistakes – or not too many mistakes“, said Iordanis Paschalidis before the race. “We have a comfortable lead. Here it is better to keep an eye on the wind, and not so much on the other competitors, otherwise you can loose too much by controlling one boat“, he said. And indeed, this tactic was rewarded by a win in the sixth race. Paschalidis/Trigonis are sailing a super series: five points (with a 4th place as discarded) from six races.

After the race, the jury had to conduct hearings regarding the validation of the race as protests had been filed by a lot of sailors. The decision was that the race has to be considered valid as there is no evidence for not doing so.
For Friday, the last day of the World Championships, the race committee will start at 9.30 am – an early bird attitude is required from all competitors. Prize giving will be held in the late afternoon.
