Dany and Kostas, congratulations on your new World Title!!
38 teams from 11 nations – was it good to have a variety of sailors from across the World?
It was great to sail against Tornado sailors from Brazil, Australia and Europe. It seems that as time passes more and more sailors from around the world are enjoying Tornado sailing.
Kostas, your training video from last year has been a massive hit with the Tornado Sailors – Is it good to see new faces at these events?
Yes, it is great, it is so nice for us to be able to help the other sailors. The people I spoke to really enjoyed the World Championships and are going away to tell their friends to come next year.
You only just missed out last year, how does it feel to be World Champions?
We have put a lot of effort in to achieve this. We are very happy to win the Championship and be amongst all those great Tornado sailors that have won the title in the past.
The wind conditions were very challenging with lots of races cancelled. How did you find sailing in Switzerland?
It was really difficult because the final results came almost from the races in one day, the last day with very strong winds. Anything could have happened and we couldn’t have time to anticipate the gust and shifts in the wind.
The last day was extremely windy, how did you cope?
We sailed very carefully! We really did not want to make a mistake that would lead to damage or a capsize. We did not risk it at any moment. In the last race we didn’t start on the line because we did not want to risk an OCS again.
How did the other sailors find the event? Did you talk to many others?
Every sailor we spoke to enjoyed the hospitality and the facilities. It was very unfortunate that we had to wait for so long for the wind every day. The first briefing was around 8.30am every morning.
We think the last day made up for the week with the sailors, although challenging the sailors had a great time racing.
We also saw a few months ago that you crossed the Aegean Sea on your Tornado? How was that?
We had the chance to sail for the first time in our lives across the Aegean sea. We enjoyed it very much, it was tough to be for 72 hours on the trampoline but the sailing was great. We sailed very close to some beautiful islands in crystal blue waters with dolphins and we had only our compass, the stars and the lighthouses to show us the way to Crete.
When we reached Crete after 72 hours we were exhausted but it worth every moment we spent sailing .
What is next for you both?
We really hope to win the Europeans for the fourth time in a row and start growing Multihull sailing in Greece.
Next year we will try to make a race in the Aegean sea, like an adventure race. We want more Tornado sailors to have the opportunity to sail in that beautiful area of the World.
